Summary:

The Lactation Consultant is an RN responsible for the assessment, planning, implementing, and management of the breast-feeding mother-baby dyad. She is a coach, consultant, teacher and lactation expert. As a specialist they work collaboratively to develop feeding plans for a range of infants from normal newborn to the complex neonate. They will make clinical assessments and use current lactation theories and research to develop evidence-based feeding plans that address individual feeding issues while respecting the physician and family breastfeeding goals.

Education:

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
  • NICU nursing experience.
  • Lactation Consultant will have a minimum of 10 continuing education hours/year of lactation focused education.


Certification/Licensure:

  • Current Texas RN License.
  • IBCLC (International Board of Certified Lactation Consultants), Certified Breastfeeding Educator, or Certified Breastfeeding Counselor.
  • BLS Certification.
